Today, we’re walking through the different parts of the Catholic Wedding Mass, where music belongs, and why each piece plays such an important role in celebrating the Sacrament of Marriage.
Your Wedding Has a Soundtrack
Last time I asked you to think about your favorite movie.
What makes it unforgettable?
Sure, the story matters. The characters matter. The cinematography matters.
But what would those iconic scenes be without the music?
The soundtrack is what stirs your emotions. It fills moments with joy, anticipation, sorrow, hope, and triumph. Even years later, hearing a single melody can instantly transport you back into that story.
Your Catholic wedding music works the same way.
The music you choose becomes the soundtrack of one of the holiest days of your life. Long after your wedding day has passed, certain hymns will bring you right back to standing before the altar, exchanging vows, and receiving the Eucharist together for the first time as husband and wife.
Music has the power to direct our hearts toward heaven. It can elevate prayer, draw us into deeper worship, and help everyone present encounter the beauty of what God is accomplishing through the sacrament.
Understanding the Order of the Catholic Wedding Mass
One of the most important parts of Catholic wedding planning is understanding the Order of the Mass.
If you’ve attended Sunday Mass regularly, much of it will already feel familiar. While there are a few unique elements included in a wedding liturgy, the structure of the Mass remains the same because the Eucharist remains at its center.
Below is a general outline of a Catholic Wedding Mass, including the moments where you’ll choose music.

This is one of the most significant musical moments of your wedding. Because Christ Himself becomes present in the Eucharist, many couples choose a hymn that reflects the Church’s Eucharistic faith.
Marian or St. Joseph Devotion (Optional)
If you plan to bring flowers to the Blessed Virgin Mary or to St. Joseph, this is typically when it takes place. You’ll choose a hymn specifically for this devotion, which we’ll discuss in the next post.

As with the processional, you may choose either an instrumental or vocal piece that joyfully concludes your celebration.
Beautiful Traditions You May Include
While this outline covers the essential structure of the Catholic Wedding Mass, many cultural and devotional traditions can also be incorporated with your priest’s approval.
These may include:

Every Part of the Mass Has Meaning
The Catholic Wedding Mass isn’t simply a beautiful ceremony.
It is the worship of God.
Every prayer, every reading, every gesture, every moment of silence, every fragrance of incense, every beam of stained-glass light, and every hymn points toward an invisible reality being made visible.
Your marriage is not merely two people making promises.
It is Christ joining two souls together in an irrevocable covenant.
As Sacred Scripture reminds us:
“Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh.” — Genesis 2:24
This is far more than a legal contract.
It is a sacrament.
It is a covenant.
It is God acting in and through your love.
Because of that, the music chosen for your Catholic wedding ceremony should never simply fill silence. It should lift every heart toward the profound mystery unfolding on the altar.

While these may also be used during Communion, I would encourage choosing music that highlights the Eucharistic mystery whenever possible. After all, if your guests are experiencing a Catholic Mass for the first time—or returning after many years—what a beautiful opportunity to gently lead them toward the heart of our faith.
